Introducing Troop 147

This fall, we are establishing Troop 147 as a Scouting option for girls age 11-17 in and around Concord.

Why? Because we believe in the power of the program and want girls to have equal access.

Scouting America, formerly known as Boy Scouts, enriches youth by fostering crucial life skills such as leadership, teamwork, problem-solving, and communication, while also developing their character, ethical values, and self-confidence. Through a wide range of activities, from outdoor adventure and service to structured advancement programs, Scouting provides a supportive environment where young people can gain resilience, learn responsibility, and build strong friendships, ultimately preparing them for responsible citizenship and adult life. Nationally, the Scouting program has welcomed girls of all ages since 2019.

We have seen young girls here in Concord thrive in Cub Scouts, the program for grades K-5. Cub Scouts is a coed program where boys and girls participate with family members. The program for middle and high school ages is currently designed as single-gender Troops. While Troop 132 has served boys in Concord since the 1920s, there has been no option for girls to continue scouting with friends in town. Troop 147 is changing that.

Unlike sports and clubs, the Scouting program of activities is set by the scouts themselves, with adults playing supporting roles. This makes Scouting a great way for girls to share their passions and try new things. We’ve organized a few initial events for the first year to jump start the fun, but consider this a playbook rather than script and are always open to new ideas with youth support.

Our founding members will be a part of Concord’s scouting history and help build a program they want to be a part of.

We expect scouts to have a wide variety of skills, experience, and interests. Teaching and learning from one another is central to the Scouting program. Shared and loaner gear like tents, sleeping bags, and camp cookware is available to everyone.

Curious? Meet us to learn more.

If you know (or are) a girl who loves the outdoors and nature, wants to get out more, and is eager to develop as an individual and leader, we invite you to learn more about Scouting with Troop 147. Our weekly meetings are a time to connect with others, share and learn skills, and plan for upcoming events. Outings such as campouts, hiking, skiing, and ropes courses provide challenges and lasting memories.

New members are always welcome. Find us at the Scout House Tuesday nights at 7pm, email us at info@troop147concord.org, or fill out our contact form to learn more.

We look forward to meeting you!

yours in Scouting,

Kate McLaughlin, Scoutmaster
